Stepping over Jessops’ threshold recently,my eyes fell on a new display of quads - the full lineup from DJI was sitting pretty waiting for Christmasshoppers. Jessops’ sales assistants soon regretasking if I need any assistance (I like to chat aboutcameras) and our man was poised and ready as Iapproached the quads. I had a nice surprise though- he knew his stuff where drones (don’t you just hatethe word) were concerned and was able to answer my questions quite well. Full marks. Hetold me that topics about where to fly and safety were always raised with purchasers andan information leaflet provided. Not long after, our club had an email from a new Phantom 3 owner wishing to joinand learn to fly his machine responsibly (his words). Again, very gratifying. Perhaps themessages are finally starting to get through. The BMFA has a fine working relationship with the Civil Aviation Authority, who haveultimate responsibility for all aviation in the UK, and they’ve jointly worked on a numberof schemes to inform and educate new drone pilots, particularly those who aren’t enteringthe model flying hobby through the more established routes. Both organisations have justannounced Drone Aware, a new, ongoing initiative and an enduring resource to educateand inform drone pilots regarding their legal and safety responsibilities. April 2016 will beDrone Aware Month, starting with a high-profile launch followed by a range of events andinitiatives, and I’m very pleased to say that RCM&E will be a Drone Aware sponsor. It’s a timely scheme and one that needs support from clubs and flyers – not leastbecause, for many casual observers, perception is reality and there’s still far too muchuninformed comment washing around, especially from the mainstream media. A recentepisode of the BBC’s Watchdog programme is a case in point. Turning attention to thesubject, it delivered a sloppy, lop-sided piece that highlighted some (apparent) incidentsand the possibility of a drone registration scheme without feeling it necessary to interviewthe CAA or BMFA on the subject.Anyway, whether you like them or not, it’s clear that drones/quads/‘copters/multirotorsare here to stay. Whatever they fly, embrace new pilots and support Drone Aware. After all, today’s FPV racer may well be tomorrow’s F3A champ.SPublished byMyTimeMedia Ltd.Enterprise House, Enterprise Way,Edenbridge, Kent.
