PREFACE.
THE
favourable reception of the former editions
of this little work, the first of which was pub
lished in 1896, has induced the author to issue
a tenth, brought up to date of the present year,
with some improvements. Practically, it con
sists of two parts, though without formal
division : a sketch of the historical and chrono
logical bearing of eclipses seen before their
scientific study began, which may be said to
date from the one which was total in England
in the year 1715; and a rapid survey of the
observations made of those which have occurred
since, and the discoveries resulting from them.
By the kind permission of the Astronomer
Royal, Sir William Η. M. Christie, I am enabled
to reproduce, as a frontispiece to this work,
one of his beautiful photographs of the total
eclipse of the 30th of August, 1905, taken at
Sfax in Tunisia.

REMARKABLE COMETS.
From
The Journal of the British Astronomical Association,
March 23, 1896.
" This valuable little book has now reached a fourth edition, the
preceding ones having been published in 1893, 1894, and 1895 . . . .
The author gives an historical account of all the comets which have
been distinguished by unusual brilliancy, or by repeated returns to
view. Such well-known comets as Halley's, Encke's, Biela's, and
a
few others, which call for somewhat full treatment, are adequately,
though concisely, dealt with, while the less prominent examples
are well chosen, and receive due notice."
